DETECTING LIQUID THREATS
Optosecurity has developed an innovative solution to overcome the challenges of detecting dangerous liquids during regular screening operations. This solution is based on the principle that dual-energy X-ray offers the means to discriminate between individual components in an X-ray image using the physical properties of these components, namely the density and the effective atomic number (also called Z effective).

Modified from R.F. Eilbert et K.D.King, "Aspects of image recognition in Vivid technology’s dual-energy X-ray system for explosive detection ",  SPIE 1824, 1992

Although similar techniques have been in used for many years to detect bulk explosive, material analysis alone is not sufficient to yield the expected results and distinguish between dangerous and benign liquids and gels. The key to Optosecurity’s solution is a patented technique that analyses the context and removes the contribution from the container, the tray, the conveyor belt and any other external effect in order to obtain precise measurements of the suspected substances.

Thanks to advanced signal processing and sophisticated algorithms that essentially reconstruct the container in 3D from traditional 2D X-ray data, it is now possible to identify any dangerous liquids or gel in a tray during regular screening operations without imposing additional processes or delays.
