Susan Smith joined Royal Bank in 1977. She has worked in retail banking, small business banking, corporate banking, human resources and investment industry banking. From 1995 to 1999 Susan led Royal Bank's Knowledge-Based Industries initiative that took the Bank to the leading edge of the financial services industry in providing innovative banking services for Canada's burgeoning Knowledge-Based Industries sector. In 1997 Susan founded Royal Bank Growth Corporation, a predecessor firm, and in 2000 she was appointed Senior Vice President of Royal Bank of Canada and President and CEO of RBC Ventures.
In 1996, Susan accepted an appointment from the Prime Minister of Canada to serve on the Advisory Council on Science and Technology (ACST), reporting directly to the Prime Minister and to the Economic Development Policy Committee of Cabinet. She has served on the National Biotechnology Advisory Council of Canada, the Ontario Research & Development Challenge Fund and the Innovations Foundation of the University of Toronto.
