Mr. John Manley, Chairman of the Board, Optosecurity “After 9/11, I quickly appreciated how sensitive we are to unanticipated threats and disruptions. Mr. Manley is a Senior Counsel with McCarthy Tétrault, a premier Canadian law firm and is a prominent figure in Canadian and International politics with an extensive career serving in Parliament. Mr. Manley served as Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2000 to January 2002. Following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, he was named Chairman of a new Cabinet Committee on Public Security and Anti-terrorism. For the role he played following 9/11, he was named TIME Canada Magazine's "Newsmaker of the Year" in December 2001.
In January 2002, Mr. Manley was appointed Deputy Prime Minister of Canada, Political Minister for Ontario, Minister of Infrastructure and Crown Corporations, and Chairman of the Cabinet Committees on Economic Union and Social Union, while continuing to serve as Chairman of the Cabinet Committee on Public Security and Anti-terrorism. He served as the counterpart to Governor Tom Ridge, who was the White House Advisor on Homeland Security, and later the first Secretary of Homeland Security, together they were responsible for the Canada-United States Smart Border Accord. Mr. Manley became Finance Minister in June 2002 and tabled the Government's federal budget in February 2003.
